Back to the original days, who did well Plateau Learning – Today? SumTotal – Today? Owned by SumTotal – who ruined it, because by then it was GeoLearning Maestro (not that great). SumTotal called it SumTotal Maestro. It was a crummy system IMO, dated, and that says something. Yet, very popular.

Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? Oracle then followed suit by acquiring SuccessFactors who had acquired Plateau in the past.

Maybe, you own a Plateau Systems Rocks T-Shirt, and thus you just can’t toss it in the heap and move on. . Never hear it, even though Blackboard has been around since the late 90’s (as online that is). .

I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). SumTotal by Skillsoft – the 2016 re-haul is a huge plus. SumTotal by Skillsoft. Saba Learning.

Another big-time player in the learning technology/system space is Vista Equity, a PE, who at one-time in the 2009-time frame owned SumTotal. However, recent buys such as Cornerstone for example, came from a PE firm. In 2021, they invested in Schoox. PeakSpan Capital , is a Growth Equity firm.

The user interface is slick – way better than the days of Plateau – which some people still call it – uh, its not. It is way better than anything Plateau ever did, but for the amount of money the system costs and the fact SAP now owns them, there is no reason that the UI should look like it does. Pricing is high.

Most of the well-known LMS vendors have user group meetings and/or conferences, including: Blackboard. Cornerstone. GeoLearning. Technology / Development-focused user groups.

If this is something you are looking for – i.e. a HCM, then they are the ones to go with – over Cornerstone, Oracle-Taleo, SumTotal and alike. Back in the days, the Plateau platform was ghastly awful. The user interface has come a long way. Not sure how SAP will eventually impact the system, but for today it stands strong.

SumTotal Learn. Deep down somewhere out there, a Plateau Learning fan is waiting. Can send a video message across the entire platform or by team. Ask an Expert/Coaching strong in some areas, needs improvements in others. Social is so-so. Seems ready to break out, but for whatever reason doesn’t. . That is great. SuccessFactors.

Plateau is now called SuccessFactors. GeoLearning’s Maestro product is now called SumTotal Maestro. These guys are always leaders in the authoring tool space, and their mLearning studio rocks – IMO. Learn.com is now called Taleo. LMS Demo Shop. Vendors can post a demo of their LMS, up to five minutes in length.

It is the same assumption that unless you buy one of the Big Dogs – Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, etc., There is an assumption that in order for a system to be great it has to cost over 75K. That is so wrong. . then you are not buying a great system. It is totally erroenous. .
