LTDX Q&As: Fitting standards in a learning ecosystem

Rustici Software

In a flexible learning ecosystem, what is the relationship between xAPI and SSO? xAPI is the standard used to track and capture activity from the systems users are accessing. xAPI includes the concept of Agent Profiles to help solve for this.

Webinar Q&A: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

Questions: What is the common identifier that allows the xAPI to connect the data provided by the ‘activity provider’ to a specific user in the LRS? Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. How do you best see xAPI interfacing with an LMS? Which LMS platforms out there today best interface with xAPI? For the Bookmarket, how is the person tracked. xAPI Tools.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. With the advent of Flash, many authoring tools started creating output that could be played by the Flash player, which meant you didn’t need special software to use the courses (if your IT org would support you having it). They wanted a standard, took a plausible set of standards from the work, and called it the Standard Courseware Object Reference Model (SCORM).

Course Standards: Where R We Heading?

Will xAPI be the one standard that is “the” standard? CMI-5 is the new player in town (I’ll get to that in a bit). But SCORM is still a dominant player out there and to assume that it is resting in a nice funeral plot or will be, I think is jumping way ahead. Look at how many people haven’t jumped over to xAPI – and that has been around for a few years. . How many vendors do you know that haven’t yet implemented xAPI?

SCORM vs AICC: how do they compare?

Elucidat

SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. There’s a limit to what it can track. SCORM lets you monitor basic data like whether a learner has completed a module and their overall score, but it won’t let you track anything more detailed than that. What about xAPI?

SCORM – When you need Inter-Operatibility between E-learning Platforms!

What is it about SCORM ( Shareable Content Object Reference Model ) that the e-learning folks are going gaga over? Imagine owning a stockpile of DVDs, but not a DVD player. Now, the DVD player that we seek should be able to play all types of DVDs single-handedly, isn’t it? Otherwise, we’d need one DVD player each that would jibe with only one type of DVD. Yes, you need SCORM when you want to track the progress and performance of the learners.

E-learning: A simpler approach, please?

Coorpacademy

SCORM stands for shareable content object reference model, and is a model that was all about creating units of online training material that could be shared across systems. . There must be useful, participative activities for the learner, and that activity has to be tracked and evaluated.

What is SCORM & Decoding Its Importance For eLearning

ProProfs

SCORM is an acronym that stands for “Sharable Content Object Reference Model”. It bears great resemblance to a DVD that works across any player. While many would argue that it needs a bit of facelift, you may be wondering – what’s the future of SCORM when its advanced version Experience API, better known as xAPI or Tin Can API, is already creating waves in the elearning domain? xAPI is built on SCORM.

SCORM Compliance and Tin Can Api

Imagine owning lots of DVDs but not having a player capable of playing them. In the case of elearning, SCORM is like the DVD player, without which you wouldn’t be able to play your movies. The Shareable Content Object Reference Model – more commonly known as SCORM – is a set of very technical standards and specifications used for web-based elearning. SCORM compliance in elearning content means that progress can be tracked and performance measured.

It may refer to smartphones, tablets, laptops or all the above. SCORM = Sharable Content Object Reference Model. SCORM LMSs can track course activities and progress. When you buy a new movie on DVD you don’t need to check to see if it works with your brand of DVD player. They would need to make differently formatted DVDs for each brand of DVD player. Talent development refers to the function within a business to hone and improve the skills of its employees.

In 2017 we tracked more than 35 different mergers and acquisitions in the learning technology space. In addition, with advanced analytics technology like xAPI, organizations are now tracking and analyzing learning experiences with incredible precision. For example, you can upload or reference any type of digital content in some systems and make it available as a standalone element or integrate it with a learning plan.

Standard adoption takes time (as we can see with xAPI), so if you are concerned or worried about having to go with CMI-5, etc. 1 xAPI. I as many folks constantly referred to xAPI as Tin Can, but recently say in the past month, I found out that Tin Can was a trademarked name by Rustici Software. As such, I will go with the proper term of xAPI (now and going forward). In 2015, I do expect to see an increase in the number of vendors implementing xAPI.

Making the Case for Adaptive Learning

Before going any further, a mention of Experience API — more commonly referred to as Tin Can, or xAPI — would be appropriate. The xAPI was created to store and provide portability for learning experiences. With xAPI statements the ability to capture more data than previous standards like AICC and SCORM is certainly possible, but the reality is it was never created to be a learning measurement tool.
