eLearning: xAPI is Geek Free and Ready to Go

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Megan Torrance      In my  previous xAPI article  I pointed to the emergence of "geek-free tools and platforms" as the hallmark that xAPI is beginning to achieve main-stream status.   In the 1960s, Dr. Bruce Tuckman proposed a team development model that lends some structure to the conversation about xAPI.   In the early Forming and Storming days of xAPI, there were no off-the-shelf tools that supported it.

Flash Player will no longer be supported after December 2020.

Also, major browser vendors are integrating these open standards into their browsers and deprecating most other plug-ins (like Flash Player). And the Flash player will be reduced to a vestigial application on your computer. Does not require any proprietary player to run it.

The continuum of xAPI questions at ATD TechKnowledge

Experience API

I enjoyed presenting with Margaret Roth of Yet Analytics and Megan Torrance of Torrance Learning at the xAPI Showcase, where we shared examples of what people are doing with xAPI. That provided a good representation of how to connect different xAPI platforms and the differences between LRSs. It was fascinating to see the variety of questions in the xAPI space the days. And xAPI (the specification) shouldn’t have an answer to it.

Webinar Q&A: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

Questions: What is the common identifier that allows the xAPI to connect the data provided by the ‘activity provider’ to a specific user in the LRS? Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. How do you best see xAPI interfacing with an LMS? Which LMS platforms out there today best interface with xAPI? That’s one of the big advantages of xAPI, *anything* can make a statement.

Market demand has grown, along with the number of vendors, business uses, integration points and related feature sets — and with good reason. More than 700 LMS vendors is too many for the market to sustain indefinitely. Winners are getting scooped up by complementary vendors who want to expand and fortify niche applications. Vendors like Thought Industries , iWise2 and CD2 Learning are leading in this arena. Which vendors are leading in each LMS category.

Course Standards: Where R We Heading?

eLearning 24-7

Will xAPI be the one standard that is “the” standard? I wouldn’t call it pondering rather I would call it a huge misnomer in the entire authoring tool industry, course development industry – with vendors here – when it comes to course standards. I’ve even seen it with LMS vendors. There are LMS vendors who no longer accept AICC. More than a few LMS vendors adding AICC as their latest standard. Vendor buy-in.

The ongoing work of learning standards

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. With the advent of Flash, many authoring tools started creating output that could be played by the Flash player, which meant you didn’t need special software to use the courses (if your IT org would support you having it). Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism. So, does xAPI replace SCORM? .

Tom Kuhlmann – Crystal Balling with Learnnovators

I’m sure that there will be some vendors who’ll sell “gamification” as a feature. Tom: Most vendors have embraced accessible development. What made Flash so valuable is that a single player controlled the playback. Taking cmi5 adoption further by developing a Conformance Test Suite

Rustici Software

Over the years, our folks have participated in the working groups for, and the development of, standards as ubiquitous as SCORM, as forgotten as RTWS, and more recently xAPI. In 2010, we were awarded a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) from ADL to modernize SCORM Communication, an effort that became known as Project Tin Can, and ultimately xAPI. This initiative will remove the barrier to entry and obstacles that the DoD and many organizations face when adopting xAPI and cmi5.

Standard Options Apply

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. The choices made soon will ultimately impact what you will be able to do with xAPI 3, 5 and 20 years from now. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. Currently, adoption of xAPI is very LRS-centric.

What I can say is that CMI-5 expresses learner activity using xAPI, which gives systems a consistent way to express the things people do. CMI-5 is an important extension of xAPI in that xAPI doesn’t specify how content should be launched (including a lack of authentication in that scenario), so cmi5 fills a crucial gap. Craig: xAPI was supposed to be the “be all” for mobile, and it just hasn’t come to fruition in terms of usage and need across the e-learning space.

These may be the trends of the coming year because forward-thinking organizations and vendors want to satisfy the needs of a busy and rapidly changing workplace. Without naming names, the big enterprise players in this space do not even have viable apps to support mobile. For 2017, this means integrating xAPI into your builds, adding the role of data scientist to any high-functioning L&D team, and ditching your clunky LMS for an LRS.

What is SCORM & Decoding Its Importance For eLearning

Hence, if an LMS vendor claims its software as SCORM compliant, it means that the LMS you have selected supports integration with other SCORM compliant content authoring tools used for creating courses. It bears great resemblance to a DVD that works across any player. xAPI is built on SCORM. Despite xAPI fast gaining momentum in the online learning world, dethroning SCORM from its position as the preferred medium of elearning is not likely to happen anytime soon.
