Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona. It is a clash of concepts, no bridge seems possible, and the problem appears to be intractable.

The evolution of personal learning environments

By and large, this constitutes John’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE). We look for solutions on YouTube, Wikipedia, blogs and such online resources when we encounter a problem. Corporate Learning Management Systems must be empowered with features that enable such social learning, and thus add another dimension to employees’ PLEs.

Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. And they are not, therefore, PLEs.

The personal learning environment (PLE) is still a bone of contention. Over at the Open University of Catalonia, in Barcelona, Ismael Peña-López has been doing some stirling work on theories surrounding Vygotsky's learning model and PLEs. For me, the PLE is peculiar to the individual who makes it.
