Let me explain: PLE. The tools within a PLE are most likely not used for the purpose of formal education of all learners within an educational institution. This is different from a PLE, a VLE and a PTE. With a bit of search engine optimisation it could work magic in terms of making the educational material that sits on a CLE visible and usable by the rest of the world. I was immediately interested because, like me, Mott is striving to bridge the gap between the organisation’s LMS and the learner’s PLE. The organisation manages the ILE on behalf of the learners, who are free to search, explore, ask and share at their own pace and at their own discretion, and – ideally – integrate the system into their broader PLE.

Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity. Certainly PLE and PKM would seem to be too limited, right? Central to my PLE is the people I work with and the applications I use for communication with those people.

Do You WANT an LMS? Does a Learner WANT an LMS?

Tony Karrer

I think that folks who are in the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) space have a much better idea of what will come next. In fact, many of us have all created our own Personal Learning Environment by cobbling together using a variety of tools (RSS Reader, Bookmarking, Social Networking, Desktop Search, Web Search, Personal Learning Blog, To Do Lists). That's what makes me think that something more along the lines of a PLE will begin to come together to replace it.
