Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Essentially, an ILE is a space (like a website or intranet site) that centralises relevant learning resources in a particular domain. Unlike a PLE, an ILE is communal. A touch dramatic, isn’t it? I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). Sound like a PLE? I deliberately avoided using the term PLE because I believe the PLE extends beyond personal web tools to encompass other tools and resources, such as paper based resources and broadcast media such as television and radio, as well as conversations with other people and so on. Sometimes, by going off on a hyperlinked tangent, learners come across websites that they would never have encountered any other way but through random jumping across cyberspace. I have previously outlined my views on what a personal learning environment should contain - it's functional components, or the anatomy and physiology of a PLE.
