Formal learning & social networking

Clark Quinn

is about informal learning, but the organization was moving to using social networking tools to scaffold their move from face-to-face to more online learning. So I was asked to talk about social networking and formal learning. tools (their environment in particular had blogs, feeds, wikis, discussion boards, portals, and profiles), and to talk about some case studies of successes. Each of these can be accomplished well through social networking tools.

Say “cheese” for social networking

From the Coleface

Part of the technology of the portal allows social networking e.g. forums. As staff all have profiles on the portal, we communicated the expectation that people would post a photo of themselves on their profile…it makes communication feel a whole lot less impersonal that email. I’ve recently been leading an internal knowledge management project.

Infopro Learning

Employee self-service portals allow team members to complete a variety of basic tasks, from personal data updates to time tracking and time off requests, without involving HR personnel or human interaction. To be effective, however, an employee self-service portal needs to be user-friendly. The HR chatbot tends toward the more intricate end of the scale, performing like a virtual assistant, but is as easy to use as Facebook messenger.

eLearning Portal Integration

Tony Karrer

Initially, the conversation was about having learning content appear on the enterprise portal. Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. It's certainly better than putting a static link to your LMS somewhere on the corporate portal / intranet. There's a question of whether social tools will be part of the LMS or outside the LMS.

The Content or the LMS? Which Comes First?

Association eLearning

Share this on Facebook. Share this on LinkedIn. You need both. Without content the LMS is an empty cookie jar. It’s pretty looking but frustrating every time you open it. Then again, content without an intuitive platform for delivery is a treasure hunt, often without a treasure map to guide you. But wait, don’t order yet, there’s more. Before EITHER the content or LMS is considered, it is important to step back and think: Who am I providing this content for and why do they need it?
