White-labeling Your Training Portal: The What, Why And How

TalentLMS

To “white-label” an online service (in our case, your online training portal), simply means to put your own logo and branding on it. With a good white-label LMS it should be trivial to drastically alter the look and feel of your training portal, and have it fully respect your corporate identity. (We’ll We’ll get back to this in the next section, where we’ll see how easy it is to white-label your TalentLMS portal). – Hides vendor ties.

Learning System Vendors Support Ratings

eLearning 24-7

There has never been an accurate number of how many learning system vendors actually have a training department, let alone trainers who provide said training, or customer education. Every vendor will state to you, if asked, how great is their support. However, behind the scenes, some of those vendors who say we are above 90%, are well, lying ( I can find no easy way to say this). Not every vendor has bad or average support. It asks for metrics from the vendor.

So, what is a branded, white-label portal in an LMS? This is where branding your learning portal comes in.

eLearning Portal Integration

Tony Karrer

Initially, the conversation was about having learning content appear on the enterprise portal. Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. It's certainly better than putting a static link to your LMS somewhere on the corporate portal / intranet. Many LMS vendors provide this capability.

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

eLearning 24-7

Vendors who have partnerships with WebEx or whomever they use, typically require you to purchase a license, which is separate from the system. Many will offer or have the ability to purchase the license for you, rather than you having to go to the vendor themselves and purchase it. Rather, “partner&# is a dual revenue steam for the vendor and their partner – a business relationship deal. If the vendor offers it, they say yes – but here is the twist.

How Do E-learning Vendors Price Their Services

But before doing that, it is a good idea to understand the typical services e-learning vendors provide and how they price those services. Services provided by e-learning vendors and how they are priced. You can put it on a website, intranet site, or an online portal. If you don’t have an LMS, your e-learning vendors can help you set up one and customize it based on your requirements.

The Content or the LMS? Which Comes First?

The process of determining LMS requirements, narrowing down vendors, getting stakeholders to review demos, and debriefing on the different options can take weeks or months. You need both. Without content the LMS is an empty cookie jar. It’s pretty looking but frustrating every time you open it. Then again, content without an intuitive platform for delivery is a treasure hunt, often without a treasure map to guide you. But wait, don’t order yet, there’s more.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed). rather then going through the LMS vendor.

Your association pays a vendor to create an interactive course that goes over the features of this new product. Now suppose the association wants to save money by making the course themselves and decides not to hire a vendor. It can be difficult to understand eLearning terms when they’re used interchangeably. Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors). Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name.

Questions to Ask Client References Before Selecting Your LMS

Association eLearning

Once you have narrowed the list of vendors that seem to fit your needs, watched demos to see the Learning Management System functionality, and narrowed the field, then comes the reference checking. Customers that have stayed with their LMS for long periods of time can give you an idea of the stability and longevity of your potential vendor. Selecting an LMS can be a very involved process. First you have to understand the requirements of multiple stakeholders. What do the users need?

LMS Stories – Fantasy or Reality?

eLearning 24-7

As I have noted numerous times, if you listen to vendors, everyone loves their system, they have retention rates in the plus 90%, yet, somehow the number one thing they hear is that people are looking for a new system, they are unhappy with their current system. If everyone is content with your system, and there are 450-500 vendors out there, then how is it, people are leaving? Virtually any vendor will do heavy customization for you – but there are additional costs to it.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. I see it a lot, especially with social learning and the wonderment of some vendors of adding a “discussion forum and text chat room&# as part of their solution. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. .

This is not (fill in the blank)

eLearning 24-7

The people who suffer the most from this contradiction are the consumers and a vast majority of vendors. If you listen to content authoring tool vendors who have added the capability of HTML5 it is easy to misunderstand what some are saying is not what you assume to be true. Even if the product is a desktop product all you need to do is upload the course to your own web server, use the vendor’s web server or via a LMS.

Why an Open Source LMS Isn’t Always the Best Option

A proprietary LMS vendor. You’re shopping for an LMS and behold FREE OPEN SOURCE LMS pops up. you say excitedly. Yes, indeed. Free and open source. Well hold the phone because if it sounds too good to be true, it’s because open source isn’t all it claims to be. Yes, it sounds like a good idea, but if you own a business or run an association, you might want to think twice about open source. What does open source mean?

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. I know of one vendor who gives end users the flash files after building the course.

Getting Started with Online Member Education

Association eLearning

It is critical to have your vendor’s support in the implementation of your learning program. Way back when I was just a marketing minion working in development at a nonprofit, I used to attend workshops and classes that would help me learn more about my industry. Although I didn’t join the associations that put these things on, I voraciously ate up the content they were offering, as often as my employer would allow me to attend.

It’s Demo Time

eLearning 24-7

Yet, for many vendors that objective, comes at a price, you have to talk to them. Regardless of the learning platform, most vendors want to know a few tidbits about you and what you are seeking before you see the product (i.e. Don’t misunderstand me, there are quite a few vendors that seriously follow the “tell me” and “I will show you only what you want to see” angle (kudos to them!), For many vendors it is all about the phone call.
