I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. PowerPoint – Ability to integrate or use PPT in your courses. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Vendor adoption is slow. It isn’t.

I was planning on adding to my Findanlms.com (the web site part of it), a new section called vendor videos, and thus seeing the video aspect on the Instilled, I saw a perfect fit. Tie a PPT or a PDF to the video as it runs – matching section or clip by clip. Yes, you can have the match of a PDF, PPT, etc. Fast Forward.

There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market.

When you see many of these awards from organizations – the general mass of them (but not all of them) require the vendor/company to submit an application for whatever category or categories. Equation tool – I’ve seen more vendors add this thing – and unless you are in education I can’t see why you would use it. HTML5 output including a PPT converter to HTML5. They offer two versions, but this is in reference to the paid version. Scenario branching. Audio recording and editing.

I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power. Same thing.

The two biggest negatives IMO, is that it just isn’t robust enough for e-learning developers and its whole focus on PPT into converting to a course doesn’t help. Screen capture – more and more vendors are adding it. Sure he blasted through it, but with this product you can’t. Yeah, people love it. Bottom Line.

That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . I see way too many vendors think a web site is all they need and people will find them.

File repository – another reason to boot LCMSs once and for all, this feature includes version updates and some analytics. Many people today prefer 3rd party authoring tools and in fact, I recommend that route rather then using a vendor’s built in authoring tool. Reporting – strong with the added bonus of ad-hoc.

Flowgram - If you've tried to use MSFT's Producer to marry up PPT with audio, notes, etc.then stop. This is maybe a less intimidating version of some of the functionality embedded in VoiceThread (below). Better idea.ask your your content authoring vendor when they'll have this functionality available!

If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Cannot move slides in the arrange mode – i.e. once you upload the PPT with the slide order, you cannot move say slide #9 to spot #4, rather you have to do this in PPT and then re-upload. I’m a big time fan of vendors who post their pricing on their site. A huge Kudos to Mindflash on this approach.
