Stay Cyber Safe: Data Privacy Courses

Stay Cyber Safe- Data Privacy Courses

At the end of 2019, the Pew Research Center released a report detailing how Americans feel about the privacy of their personal information and data.

The cliff notes version?

Not good.

According to the research, roughly six-in-ten U.S. adults say they do not think it is possible to go through daily life without having data collected about them by companies or the government.

What’s more, the majority of people think their personal data is less secure today and that data collection poses more risks than benefits.

I have a friend who refuses to get any type of store loyalty card because he doesn’t want his purchase activity tracked. Meanwhile, I’m over here practically throwing my purchase data at Kroger and various couponing/cashback apps so I can more personalized coupons for the things I’m going to buy anyway.

I like saving money, but the more I learn about cybersecurity, the more I’m starting to rethink my stance on those apps…

Data privacy isn’t just a personal problem, however. It’s a huge concern for businesses.

Currently among U.S. adults:

  • 81% feel they have very little to no control over the data that companies collect about them
  • 81% feel that the risks of companies collecting data about them outweigh the benefits
  • 79% are very concerned about how companies use the data collected
  • 59% feel they have very little to no understanding about what companies do with the data collected

Your customers need to trust that their data is safe with you. Trust is an essential foundation to a long lasting relationship with your customers or clients.

To earn that trust, you must enact clear privacy policies, make it easy for customers to understand how you use their data, and state what measures you are taking to protect it. You must also be willing to own up to any mistakes and be transparent about measures you are taking to fix data privacy issues.

Everyone in your organization must work together and be on the same page about data privacy best practices. This requires training and creating a culture of cybersecurity awareness.
