You know the answer already if you read last week’s post : an LMS RFP is not the first step of the selection process, it’s the result of the first step. Just as in any industry there are people who lie or as we say “misrepresented” their product. I have run into the same issue – salespeople who say their product does A but in reality it does not. . Heck, I even have dealt with folks at a higher level (senior execs and a CEO or two) who say they can do this (in the product itself) and then you find out they can’t. Think about the following: If people are going to access internally (at your company) what version of browser software do you have? What version of Office are you using. One vendor is focused only on SaaS products including social media. One vendor whose product is free, charges a low fee if you want an 800 number – now I know you just said, “free” and that is not free. I must admit I am still in a daze on some shocking data, I saw in the last few weeks (on a side note: the new and updated version of my LMS/LCMS directory will be available for download this upcoming Tuesday). One vendor asked if you wanted to learn more about their product and sent you to their help desk to notify them of errors or issues with their system (hmm, not likely to buy one from these guys). Nearly 100% of time, it is a product demonstration.
