Questions: What is the common identifier that allows the xAPI to connect the data provided by the ‘activity provider’ to a specific user in the LRS? Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. How do you best see xAPI interfacing with an LMS? There are numerous reasons why these organizations are unhappy with their LMS vendor. Over time, the organization has evolved, and training requirements have changed, but often their legacy LMS is no longer fit-for-purpose or the vendor doesn’t provide adequate support and services to meet the client’s developing needs. With the increase in remote work, many organizations need a better learning platform and vendors who do not overpromise and under deliver on their product roadmaps.

The ongoing work of learning standards

The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. They wanted a standard, took a plausible set of standards from the work, and called it the Standard Courseware Object Reference Model (SCORM). Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism. ADL decided to create a new standard, the Experience API (xAPI; originally known as Tin Can).

I recently had a conversation with Mike Rustici, who was part of the development of xAPI and sits at the helm of Watershed LRS. Sure, we do our needs analysis and follow ID methods, but I have been in many meetings where internal developers or vendors basically pulled a “Don Draper,” with elegant arguments and pretty slides about how an initiative should be put together. Further, xAPI is an open format which means it can be applied to almost anything, not just learning.
