Social Bookmarking: Your Favorites Really Want to be Free

Mike Taylor

You wanted to access a bookmark on your work computer from home (Or vice versa). You couldn’t find a bookmark you know you saved because there are too many or you didn’t remember which folder you put it in. Your first question may be, “What the heck is social bookmarking?”.

Social Bookmarking for Link Sharing

Tony Karrer

On TrDev, we've been discussing the sharing of links via forum posts vs. social bookmarking tools such as del.icio.us. I've discussed this before: Social Bookmarking Tricks for Group Learning Personal and Group Learning Using Web 2.0 She lets folks know to use the del.icio.us With del.icio.us (and better yet Yahoo MyWeb), you can go back and find them later. Ever had the experience of going back and searching for the list of links?

Why I Use More than One Social Bookmarking Service

Web Tools for Learners

So when I read about speculation that my wonderful collection of bookmarks on del.icio.us Internet search marketers could lose some invaluable free tools from Yahoo such as their Site Explorer. Bing is exciting as an effective challenger to Google, but if that competition comes at the cost of cannibalising Yahoo’s innovative search work – then we won’t be so excited about Bing any more. So I have two active accounts on different social bookmarking services.

I saw a post by Ray Sims that quoted Bill Ives writing: Putting my blog posts into del.icio.us also allows me to see who else tagged these posts to determine the ones that others found useful enough to tag in del.icio.us. From Bill Ives - Where Tagging Works and Where Tagging Doesn’t Work – Search Engine Lowdown I guess I tend to agree with Danny Sulliivan about the tagging and search but that is not the original intention of tagging. If I want to search on a key word, I will still go to Google as the most efficient way. If I have the time to go exploring through multiple links and see the interrelations between key words, I might go to del.icio.us.

Diigo User Communities

Experiencing eLearning

I just realized that Diigo lets me see everyone who has bookmarked my site and what they saved. If you’re more interested in the people than the pages and tags, the People Search By Site is a better tool. Obviously the information’s a bit limited because only 12 people have bookmarked my site, but it’s still fun to look at what they saved and how they tagged it. A site with more bookmarks, like Vicki Davis’ site community , has much richer information.
