This week we looked at Social Networks. Here are some thoughts on this topic, especially thoughts around social networks for learning. Starting with Social Networking was a blessing and a curse. Social networks have a tendency to be a bit messy. Virginia Yonkers told us - I would like to know how to manage the information flows in social networks. How do we do this in the social network environment?

I've run across a couple of interesting posts recently that seem to have spawned from a Business Week article - Scaling the Social Web. Hasn't eBay had social networking features for a long time? all have a social networking aspect to them? The point is that its probably natural for lots of sites to have social networking type features and functions for visitors. This is something we are commonly doing on sites today.

Social networking platforms are part of mainstream culture. who have internet access use social networking technologies for blogging, chatting, online communities and more. I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. They form a network of people via interactions, groups, etc. Being a network, they generally are a little harder for people to understand. An article, Teens Experiencing Facebook Fatigue , provided some interesting findings about the social networking site, Facebook. According to the article: A survey of 600 teens ages 13 to 17 in late April found that teens spend two hours per day online on average, 80% of which is spent using a social network. These same teens are, however, showing signs of “Facebook Fatigue.”
