Social Bookmarking for Link Sharing

Tony Karrer

On TrDev, we've been discussing the sharing of links via forum posts vs. social bookmarking tools such as del.icio.us. I've discussed this before: Social Bookmarking Tricks for Group Learning Personal and Group Learning Using Web 2.0 She lets folks know to use the del.icio.us With del.icio.us (and better yet Yahoo MyWeb), you can go back and find them later.

Why I Use More than One Social Bookmarking Service

Web Tools for Learners

So when I read about speculation that my wonderful collection of bookmarks on del.icio.us Internet search marketers could lose some invaluable free tools from Yahoo such as their Site Explorer. Bing is exciting as an effective challenger to Google, but if that competition comes at the cost of cannibalising Yahoo’s innovative search work – then we won’t be so excited about Bing any more. So I have two active accounts on different social bookmarking services.

My New Social Bookmarking Tool

I have been a big fan of social bookmarking and my preferred tool for social bookmarking has been Delicious. With the initial rumor that Yahoo will be discontinuing it and now the news they may be selling it , I imported my bookmarks to Diigo. So, if you are a Diigo user you can bookmark my posts using the icon in the right column. Cloud Social Media Misc.

Matthew 5:13 (New Testament) The Delicious social bookmarking site used to be one of my favourite social media tools. When Yahoo bought Delicious back in 2005 for an estimated $18 million, we all expected great things, and we got them. The tagging facility was second to none, and it was easy to see who else was interested in the same links as you, and then discover what other links they had bookmarked that might have passed you by. "You are salt for the earth.

However, it interestingly left out a lot of what I said was missing in my post - Yahoo MyWeb better than del.icio.us, rollyo, et.al. My claim back then was the Yahoo MyWeb has some features that made it better for a lot of corporate users, and while I hate to argue for its use, the fact that two years later after Yahoo acquired del.icio.us (delicious), they've not addressed these issues is a surprise.

Learning Organizations, eLearning 2.0 and Edupunk

Tony Karrer

The questions she raises are: Is the edupunk ideology saying that the use of social media in commercial learning management systems is an assault on the very philosophy of learning 2.0? If you have a population of learners who have already adopted tools (such as blogging and social bookmarking) for themselves that are different than the corporate tool (the LMS) do you ask them to move? For example, having social bookmarking that allows links to be kept private to a group.
