Global digital tribe

Learning with 'e's

It is your personal network. Whether or not we realise it, if we regularly use social media, we are members of the world wide digital tribe. Post-industrial society saw the emergence of personal computers, the Web and a global communication network of mobile phones. Social media, the most social of all modern technologies, provided us with shared virtual spaces where we could ''meet''.

Cultural hegemony and disruption

Cultural hegemony is imposed as political doctrine largely through the state education system, but also via other means including print media and broadcasting. I emphasise here the power of participatory media to promote democracy and to a strengthening of the influence of the voice of the people. The current exponential adoption of social media has huge implications for the system of education, itself a key component of cultural hegemony.

So does Linkedin really work?

From the Coleface

I’m often asked the question does Linkedin really help or is it a waste of time? Like most social media it allows us to do things that we do in real life faster, more cheaply, with more reach and more publicly (or with less privacy, if you prefer). Fast forward about ten years and I get introduced to Linkedin. It’s a grown-up business version of the hall photo game. I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent (or wasted) on Linkedin.

Posted on the BERA blog , Peter Ford made the argument that unless academics and educationalists engage with classroom teachers on social media, they are in danger of being consigned to the periphery. Ford's argument is that currently, much of the cut and thrust of educational practice is played out on Twitter, Facebook, in blogs and other public online spaces. The blogs themselves would be the room and the audience would be those who were connected through social media.

The Rise of Social Everything

Marcia Conner

Within five years, I predict, the word social will seem as cliché as synergy feels now. Social connection will be like a dial tone, something we once expected to hear and now don’t bother listening for as we dial. We must get comfortable in our social shoes. Social tools allow us to reach across time and space to solve complex problems and make informed decisions in ways we couldn’t dream of years ago. Social is not a set of technologies.
