Most of us have Facebook accounts and collaborate with friends, family and colleagues through this media. We also use tools such as Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media. In a lot of cases, we are using internal corporate social media tools to collaborate. This has included reading some books, attending some webinars, and talking with other learning professionals about how they are making social media work in a learning environment.

I started out very careful only connecting to people I knew really well, later I discovered that there is a value for looser a network as long as it is focused on a certain industry. So what’s your social media policy? Facebook, is for me, the place I be me. I can see a B2C company using Facebook, but that’s not me, so it’s not a biz place. Oddly, I used to connect to almost anyone related to elearning on Facebook, but I realized that was a mistake. Other social media tools I use for specific things include Yammer, Skype, and of course dedicated tools like Google Docs of various sorts, Doodle, and more.

It’s Google’s trump card against the likes of Facebook and Twitter. The achilles heel of Facebook is that its friending system is binary: either you are my friend or you are not. Indeed, Facebook has a “friends list&# feature which allows you to filter your incoming news feed. Granted, I’m no Facebook expert, so maybe this can be done.
