Previously when I discussed freeform and template-based rapid content authoring tools, I kept software simulation tools aside. The main reason was that such simulation tools are not always used for developing just any type of learning but focused on training content creation for a specific software application or system.

This interaction is one element from a complex software simulation, developed in Captivate. The software is used for planning flight patterns for drones. In the full simulation, learners can select from several waypoints and also “play back” a flight pattern. The map element was created with custom states.

I am working on a new software simulation. Just received a new computer with the updated version of captivate and for some reason the simulation only shows the first and last slide i do with nothing in the middle. I have two monitors and set the simulation to record the application window.

Various other authoring tools provide this facility to record simulations, but Adobe Captivate 9 is the most easy-to-use tool to create software simulations. What I loved were the software simulations that I could create and how impressive (and useful) they were for clients. We created simulations for in-person training as well as strictly elearning. Adobe took over Captivate around version 3 or 4 (I cannot recall which one exactly). Nothing changed. This is why I hated Captivate.

Creating software simulations has always been one of Captivate's core strengths. From the Home screen, double-click Software Simulation, select the area of the screen or application to record, select your mode (or modes), click the Record button, and away you go. If the DPI Awareness issue is gone, great.

Storyline also comes with a feature called Action Fine-tuning, which allows you to go back and make fine adjustment to your software simulations. Another reason to like Storyline in my opinion.
