eLearning: When Should You Record Your Voiceover Audio?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Kevin Siegel      Adding voiceover audio to eLearning enhances the learner experience. And before you spend thousands of dollars hiring voiceover talent to record your audio, you should know: your voice is fine (nobody likes their own voice so trust me on this, yours will do nicely). I've found that the voiceover audio does not have to be highly produced to be effective.   So what about interactive software simulations or soft-skills learning?

eLEARNING DEVELOPMENT: How Much Time Does It Take to Create eLearning?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

If you’re creating a software simulation, you’ll need a step-by-step recording script.   Once you're written the software simulation script, you'll likely need to run through it multiple times to ensure it's accurate.   If you're going to include voiceover audio (and I highly suggest that you do since audio has been shown to improve the learner experience), you should create an audio script.

You can use it to take existing PowerPoint slides, add voiceover narration, optionally record a self-video while presenting the lesson, add eLearning scenes and characters, add interactive elements, add a quiz, and publish the lesson to an LMS. But, as is typical with any kind of software, the easier the software is to use, the fewer choices you have about certain things. This software allows you to focus more on the content than on eLearning functionality.

These videos would have software demos, screencasts and PowerPoints embedded inside them. Also every screen would have audio (voiceover with my voice) accompanying it. There are quite a few Software Simulation Tools out there. Question from a reader, hoping you can provide your thoughts: I am in the process of selecting an elearning tool that is easy to use, quick to create the demos and does not bloat the file size much.

Brandon Winston: One of the ones … it is kind of a follow-on for a safe place to fail, software simulation. You can build a software simulator that really not only trains them in the right way to it but lets them know, but lets them know, “Hey, if you click that button it would’ve deleted all of this information, so always click this one.” ” So I love software simulation and the repeatability of that.

So, you must identify how you want a particular subject to be taught in the e-learning course – using online scenarios, utilizing a virtual guide (an avatar), or letting learners explore a simulated environment. You also need to decide whether you need a male/female voiceover. For example, Adobe Captivate is widely used for creating software simulation-based courses and Lectora Inspire to convert text-heavy content into online courses.

To overcome this problem, corporate training has turned to simulations which help the learner experiment in situations that are as close to real life as possible. Simulations support the idea of learning by doing. E-learning has also adopted the idea of simulations and there are authoring tools that can add a punch to different kinds of training. Software-based simulations for IT training. Technical simulations for process training.

If an authoring tool offers video editing capabilities, you as an instructional designer, don’t have to look for additional video software. Typically a screencast (another name for screen recording) is made using an installed piece of software on the computer, but here, you use your authoring tool to do the same. When using an authoring tool for screencasting, you can often record both audio and the screen.
