Standard Options Apply

MakingBetter

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. The choices made soon will ultimately impact what you will be able to do with xAPI 3, 5 and 20 years from now. I’m going to lay out options for how we can approach standardization and the reasoning behind them. In August, 2014 I participated in one of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC) monthly meetings.

What is the xAPI Standard and Why is it the Future of Learning Technology?

Docebo

Get ahead of the learning technology curve by enabling xAPI in your LMS. Whether in terms of food, music, friends or significant others, we all know standard are important. Thanks to the Aviation Industry Computer-based Training Committee (AICC) , elearning standards have been in place since 1988. In 2000, Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) entered the picture and standardized the way a Learning Management System read and presented learning content.

xAPI Shifting to 3rd Gear

MakingBetter

Between November 2014’s xAPI Hyperdrive and the xAPI track at DevLearn 2014, we hit our stride. We had people well outside of the ADL bubble talking about real world things things they were using xAPI to accomplish. What happened at xAPI Camp Amazon? We got Sean Putman to come in from Detroit to talk about what he all did with Altair’s software and xAPI. Russell Duhon talking about what it takes to run xAPI in Enterprise… at scale.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. As Stephen Johnson tells us, in his book Where Good Ideas Come From , the openness of standards fosters innovation. . Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

IEEE LTSC xAPI TAG to vote on proposing IEEE standardize xAPI

Experience API

Facts: Next week, the IEEE LTSC xAPI TAG will be taking a vote about if and which aspects of xAPI 1.0.3 to propose to the broader IEEE for consideration as a standard. Opinions (mine): Somewhat important: standardization matters in that many organizations (particularly some outside the US) will care that xAPI has (eventually) been blessed by IEEE. More important: the nexus of xAPI work is moving toward this group, and it’s active. Political intrigue.

Transitioning from SCORM to xAPI

Web Courseworks

On October 5 th , 2017, the Department of Defense announced that its eLearning curricula would adhere to xAPI standards rather than the more traditional SCORM standards of the eLearning industry. If a large government body that used to require the use of SCORM standards in their eLearning is willing to take the plunge, the rest of us might take a moment to consider doing so ourselves. It completely misses the point of adopting the xAPI standard.

eLearning: xAPI is Geek Free and Ready to Go

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Megan Torrance      In my  previous xAPI article  I pointed to the emergence of "geek-free tools and platforms" as the hallmark that xAPI is beginning to achieve main-stream status.   In the 1960s, Dr. Bruce Tuckman proposed a team development model that lends some structure to the conversation about xAPI.   In the early Forming and Storming days of xAPI, there were no off-the-shelf tools that supported it.

The purpose of the initiative was to develop a standard for eLearning that would meet the needs of both federal and private sectors to replace AICC and correct previous problems. xAPI conceptualized

Clark Quinn

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the xAPI Base Camp, to present on content strategy. While I was there, I remembered that I have some colleagues who don’t see the connection between xAPI and learning. What I was trying to capture was how xAPI tracked activity, and that could then be used for insight. I think one of the problems people have is that they think xAPI is a solution all in itself, but it is just a syntax for reporting.

xAPI Communities of Practice

MakingBetter

Last year, ADL began organizing Communities of Practice around the design considerations and implementation of xAPI in different contexts. There are many ways xAPI can be applied — how one designs and develops best really depends on the use case. This work is important as it informs xAPI’s current refinements as a specification. It’s value is multiplied as the different ways in which these Communities of Practice use xAPI become explicit.

Why DoDI 1322.26 is important for the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

The latest DoDI advises all entities within the DoD to procure eLearning technology solutions that are compliant with the SCORM or Experience API (xAPI) specifications. After xAPI was released in 2013, it was hard for government organizations to purchase modern products as xAPI was not supported by the existing Instruction and there was no way to verify if an xAPI solution conformed to the specification. So how can I find an xAPI compliant product?
