Digital Signal Processor and Text-to-Speech

Tony Karrer

This is the second post in a series on Text-to-Speech for eLearning written by Dr. Joel Harband and edited by me (which turns out to be a great way to learn). The first post, Text-to-Speech Overview and NLP Quality , introduced the text to speech voice and discussed issues of quality related to its first component – the natural language processor (NLP). And don’t forget to factor in Text-to-Speech NLP Quality.

Using Text-to-Speech in an eLearning Course

Tony Karrer

This is third post in a series on Text-to-Speech for eLearning written by Dr. Joel Harband and edited by me (which turns out to be a great way to learn). In the first two posts, Text-to-Speech Overview and NLP Quality and Digital Signal Processor and Text-to-Speech , we introduced the text to speech voice and discussed issues of quality related to its components: the natural language processor (NLP) and the digital signal processor (DSP).

How to get the elearning content?

Creativ Technologies

Companies may want to shop for content, but there are many considerations involved. The first of them is that you need to search for various options before getting the right one. It is important to decide about the topic of the elearning.

What should be the inevitable qualities of an elearning authoring tool?

Creativ Technologies

The e-learning companies USA, have so many decisions to make when it comes to using authoring tools. However, since the tools cost so much, such organizations have to assess the future requirements of such software also.

eLEARNING DEVELOPMENT: Polly Want a Voice?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

When it comes to audio in eLearning, my experience strongly suggests that adding voiceover audio to your project enhances the learner experience. Does this mean that you need to hire professional voiceover talent? If you’ve got the budget, hiring professional talent is the best way to go. Nevertheless, there are times when you simply don’t want to use your own voice, and you cannot afford to hire professional talent. by Kevin Siegel, CTT, COTP.

New E-Learning Rankings: Authoring Tools

eLearning 24-7

Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. Listings can always be found on a new page called “rankings” which will appear in one month – thus eliminating the need to do a search (if applicable). I always prefer going from 10 to 1, it builds excitement. #10: The new iSpring Pro 7 – currently in beta adds additional powerhouse features, including PPT to HTML5 output (which right now is a standalone product). #8

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

The magic 8 ball is a fun item to use. Have you ever opened up a fortune cookie and said to yourself, “How did it know that about me?” From an interaction (listed as interactivity) to a feature within the product. Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. How hard is it to offer such a capability within your product?

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. Your end users make up that mass, and a statement I hear often is that people aren’t staying in the systems to fully benefit from it. The growing number of businesses leaving Microsoft Outlook to Internet e-mail is amazing. It is time to remove the blinders.

Being Thankful: E-Learning Thoughts

eLearning 24-7

A time to get together, relax and over gorge on food – whatever it might be. You watch a couple of football games, normally including the lousy Lions (not this year, though) and grumble to yourself whether you should eat that last piece of pumpkin pie or not (I always eat it). It is also a time to be thankful. Thus, it makes only sense to present my list of “thanks” from an e-learning perspective. If someone is interested they will reach out to you.

Articulate, Captivate and Lectora – Do they deserve your praise?

eLearning 24-7

Two weeks ago I got the wonderful opportunity to speak in OZ, specifically Melbourne, Australia. They were hungry to know more information. Hungry to learn as much as they could and hungry to see what was in the space. I wasn’t thunderstruck, but what I was surprised at was the number of folks who had or were about to purchase the well known authoring tools in the market, Articulate, Captive and Lectora.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. However, where you would expect some to move towards – they haven’t, which is disappointing on multiple tiers.

Authoring Tools- The DevLearn Experience

eLearning 24-7

I readily admit that I was unsure what to expect. From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. I believe that is going to change.

Low Cost LMSs – Yes, u can find one for under 10K

eLearning 24-7

The argument that you have to spend over 50K to find a sweet LMS is totally bogus. These are folks who are going to use your system. This does not mean that anyone who has more than 5,000 users should be a system in the low cost mode, but rather these systems are definitely suited to this business size. The variance of UIs from slick to yucky exist in this market, but don’t despair – awful UIs can be had in systems that run over 100K.

Devlearn conference day one: an exhilarating day

Challenge to Learn

So we are off to an excellent start with DevLearn. I was able to attend some sessions and keynotes and talked to lot’s of people. I try to spot the emerging trends at conferences like this, for this conference there are two. Acceptance for cloud based solutions is definitely growing, almost all the vendors have plans in that direction. TinCan will free us from this, it allows you to track and trace any learning experience, anywhere.

Top 10 eLearning Predictions 2011 #LCBQ

Tony Karrer

We strongly believe the #LCBQ offers an opportunity to have something online that's like a sophisticated cocktail party. Situated learning (learning within context in a community of practice) grows thanks to augmented mobile reality. Virtual classrooms and smart-boards are used in a more student-centered way (not putting all the attention to one person up-front=bad). open up exciting opportunities for people to access relevant information where and when they require it.

Ghost Edition – Top 10 Authoring Tools for 2013

eLearning 24-7

Welcome to my yearly Halloween Edition. Each one has a frightful story to tell. For each authoring ranking, a brief true ghost story, then the vendor and why it was selected. What I like about this product includes the ability to output to HTML5, works on mobile devices, is extremely easy to use, appears within PowerPoint and SCORM. A newbie to the rankings. For House on the Haunted Hill, he had skeletons come down from the screen to the audience.

DevLearn 2011 The Exhibitors

One of the most useful aspects of DevLearn is the Vendor Expo. Here's Jackie stabbing wildly at an LMS voodoo doll. And here is a quick summary of the exhibitors who caught our attention.ZebraZapps – Allen Interactions made a big stripy splash at last year’s Devlearn , announcing their plans for a new cloud based approach to content development and asking volunteers to sign up for beta testing. The resulting learning objects can then be published to a web site or the cloud.

Summer Course Authoring Tool Rankings – Top Ten

eLearning 24-7

Annoying summer related songs – from Cruel Summer to Summertime and everything else. BBQs, swimming and annoying neighbors trying to scam some free food. Well, it is a fun product to create a course. Fun - just like that pool party you are going to have in July – I am expecting an invite BTW. #9 Perhaps you need a summertime refreshment to lower the flow. Text to speech – Very nice – everyone should offer this feature.

M-Learning: Landscape Changer: E-Reader

eLearning 24-7

I was chatting with someone the other day on this topic and she said to me (and btw she is an end user, not someone in the industry), why would I want to access a course on my Blackberry? However with an e-reader, I would be able to see the course since the screens are larger (more in a sec. She added, I have no desire to take a course on my Blackberry and never would. Other File Formats – Relevant to Us. Who is going to read that?),

Most learning vendors tout their ‘expertise in instructional design’ as a key reason as to why we should engage them to produce learning content.
