Text To Speech Synthesizers

The eLearning Coach

This is how you start to think about voice characters after listening to them through text to speech synthesizers (TTS). When Adobe included a text to speech application in Captivate 4, I began to think that TTS might be a viable option in certain situations. For example, text to speech software is certainly a viable approach for providing accessibility to visually impaired persons.

The first post, Text-to-Speech Overview and NLP Quality , introduced the text to speech voice and discussed issues of quality related to its first component – the natural language processor (NLP). And don’t forget to factor in Text-to-Speech NLP Quality.

Storyline updates and a Captivate TTS fix

ICS Learning

Aside: it appears each Storyline update is a full installer, not just a ‘patch’…so if you’re installing Storyline on a new machine (or reinstalling), you don’t have to go back the original installer and apply all these updates individually – just install the latest version and apply your license. In other news, a recent LinkedIn discussion noted how Captivate 7’s TTS engine seemed to be performing erratically. And that seemed to fix the issue!

Kicking the Tires

Adobe Captivate

I find it difficult to master new enhancements working with each in isolation, so I have a tendency to add as many of a software tools enhancements to a single personal learning project as possible. For the new Captivate 2017 release I took a very text intensive tutorial created in Captivate 7 a few years ago and migrated up versions until I reached Captivate 2017. Set to Go to the Next Slide on success, 3 attempts allowed, Continue on Final Attempt. Project moves to the next slide. I should note our standard process is to provide text-to-speech at the slide audio level, which is why we extend the click box out so far.

When are System Simulations Appropriate?

Integrated Learnings

They are a great way to learn system navigation without using the actual system. A learner can watch the steps in a procedure with text describing what is happening. Or, you can use audio using a recorded narration or text-to-speech technology. While this may be a good way to introduce system navigation, it lacks the interaction required for the learner to truly get “hands on” experience in using the system. By Dean Hawkinson.
