Fearing Forgetting: Should You Try to Maintain or Relearn Knowledge?

Scott Young tells us that a great irony in learning is that those who remember best are the most acutely aware of how much they’ve forgotten. Like Scott, for those of us who enjoy learning a wide variety of things, the maintenance problem can be a thorny one. If that piques your interest, this is something you should definitely check out.

When Training is the Wrong Solution

Training is too often the proverbial hammer in search of nails. It’s an easy check mark to show that action has been taken, assuming that improving individual skills is the core issue that needs to be addressed. Harold Jarche shares the example of diversity for which training isn’t getting the job done.

Richard Clark: Task Analysis & Training Design

Guy Wallace hosts Richard Clark to discuss some of his practices and perspectives on Evidence Based Practices for Instructional Systems Design and Performance Improvement. One particularly interesting and relevant point in here is that:

“experts who are the primary source of most of the information we give for training are unaware of very key things that they do to be successful at their area of expertise. We think about 70% of the decisions in the analysis that experts make…they’re not even aware of.”
