Courses – regardless if self-paced (which they have always been, hence the reason around WBT) or synchronous-based, think the syllabus or stop and wait approach that EdTech – meaning K-12 and higher education use frequently. No one really says asynchronous or synchronous anymore, but they are/were the terms readily used.

The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). ILT (Instructor-Led Training).
