The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Authorware usage and fan base made Storyline supporters and usage look like a rock stage at a state fair. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it. Other course authoring tools started to appear right after Authorware.

They took a premise of strong course design that allows interactivity and engagement, with knowledge of ADDIE or at least some basic ID understanding, and flipped it into a PPT template so that you can create quickly your courses and get them online. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Everyone I knew, followed the ADDIE approach. Instructional design was actually being used.

The weapons including Authorware, Macromedia Director, DazzlerMax, Toolbook were the ones that separated the knights from the common folk. Eventually the land saw Macromedia Breeze and Dreamweaver enter the lands, with these items called templates. Non-linear learning would continue, regardless of the template elves.

I was never told about Gagnes 9 Events or the Kilpatrick Levels or ADDIE or the ARCS model or even much about adult learning styles, except that people all learned differently. I learned Toolbook and Authorware on my own while in the program. Template by Tina Chen. The degree opens many doors but thats about it.
