Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. That said, for a freebie -and yes, I said freebie (open source) it has a lot of power. To give you an example, the free version is ADL SCORM 2004 certified (many commercial paid ones are not).

An alarming rate of “get the content up now, ASAP&# regardless of what it looks like, instructional design is typically tossed out the window, especially when the ID, CD or whomever is tasked to create is handed a stream of documents in Word or PPT or some other form. Overall, I think the field is wide open for a bit of everything. This group includes folks from the ADL, IBM, Sun, etc. No needs assessment, no functional spec, no design -- just get that ppt deck going and slap some e-learning together.
