I was a software developer working on a quizzing product that needed to export data to a variety of e-learning systems. So I researched but quickly got lost in the minutia of details and acronyms -- AICC, CMI, SCO, XML, ECMAScript, manifest, packaging, and API. It is based on an instructional design or storyboard.

Storyboards were common. That anyone, without any knowledge around ID or e-learning development could create a course quickly. Output was AICC (boo) and SCORM. Advanced – Captivate and Lectora. Many learning system vendors saw big upticks in sales, whereas they were projecting a poor year.

If I am an authoring tool vendor, I would explore what is happening in the authoring tool market, what my product looks like, how I can make it better for my target audience and what do I see or others I trust see the e-learning space is heading. . At least SCORM support – Plenty still support AICC. Output to HTML5.
