Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. EduWiz $1,299.

I wasn’t thunderstruck, but what I was surprised at was the number of folks who had or were about to purchase the well known authoring tools in the market, Articulate, Captive and Lectora. When people think authoring tools, three products typically come to mind. The king of authoring tools. Articulate. Feature rich.

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). No reason, I just love saying that) Mzinga shows up with a true social learning authoring tool.

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Mobile Learning. If anything because it delays rollout.

Lectora’s Snap! Lectora Snap! Library pulls in your video, audio, flash and image files right from your video,image, flash, audio folders on your computer – GREAT IDEA – although I wish they added HTML5. Flash – Add flash to a page, similar issue i.e I am unsure if Snap!
