This is something that gets discussed as emergent: see Emergent Knowledge Management , Direction of eLearning - Emergence or Big System , and Future Platforms for eLearning. Orientations, classes, and meetings are often held in Second Life. I've not really seen good examples of business cases (future ROI) for using these tools.
