Perspective Matters

Tom Spiglanin

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Most of us would instinctively say that we see ourselves, but of course we’re really looking at a reversed image of what others see. Our perspective of our image is inaccurate, but it’s nonetheless how we see ourselves through our mirror. Only through scientific observation and analysis do we know otherwise. Training may be needed to address performance gaps.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Online Visual Identity

Learning Visions

And I saw how one dimensional our images of our online contacts (and digital friends) can be -- typically based on the same profile picture thats used in countless places. I do, indeed, often look like that. It has something to do with creating an online identity thats well-rounded. Hi Cammy - I know the feeling! Its great to see different facets and images of people. You know I love this, Cammy. Although Im professional, I do have many faces.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Audio in eLearning: Cultural Differences?

Learning Visions

Do you use audio on every slide because the client says people will think its broken if you dont? Weve taken this up before and many of us IDs know the strategies for using audio most effectively by now. We know to avoid narrating text word for word, for instance. You do know that, right?) Do Americans just like to talk way too much? Do I hear India? and what can we do now that we have digital voices that we couldnt do so well before?

How to Find, and Embrace, Your Company’s Hidden Experts

Mindflash

Because the more we know what our “thing” is — the more we know our unique abilities — the better we can identify our inner “expert.”. Every company has hidden “experts” who, with some effort, can help support the organization by teaching what they know best — by sharing their expertise with the entire organization. Assess the organization’s performance needs. Review the performance level of all areas of the company. What core skills do all employees need?

Mindflash

What we call learners is really someone looking for help doing their job. Additional tweets from participants: @kelly_smith01 – Another reason why folks #HateTraining is that they already know or have easy access to content – they don’t need it. tmiket – People #hatetraining b/c it’s often do TO them instead of FOR them. charlesjennings – Learning is doing. ruthie_hb – Focus on what gap training trying to fill?

Where is the road map?

Learning with e's

No matter how much successive governments pontificate on 'the way ahead' and no matter how much (or how little) money they throw at the problem, the fact is - we are standing still, because no one really knows where we are going. Anyone who claims they know the way forward is either deluded, or lying. Yet we do know this: Education needs reform, because far too many young people are being let down by the current system. Can do an awful lot with PPT. It’s very easy to load content on slides – but it takes more creativity to move learner to actual understanding! Use scenarios – apply what you know to make a decision.Ask the learner to take info that’s not clearcut and apply it using a question (in PPT – picture of a farmer and 3 images of “experts&# to ask for advice. Whose advice do you follow?) The eLearning Salary Gender Gap Phew!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning from Observation

Learning Visions

Not surprisingly, a lot more activity was seen if test subjects were watching to learn (anticipating that they were to do the task later) vs. watching only. Im no neuroscientist, but these kinds of images get me excited -- seeing which areas of the brain light up. It goes to show, weve got to make sure that were putting the right content into our courses -- so that the learner knows that he or she is actually going to be using this information later.

The universe has shifted slightly as Ive adjusted my images. Its nice to know who youre really talking to. This is me, in case you were wondering: I still havent bothered trying to figure out how to change my blogger image from that damn apple! ha Do we undervalue non-verbal communication? I dont do any online teaching at the moment, but I do a lot of online collaboration on projects -- reviewing content with SMEs, going over storyboards, etc.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

Reuben on the downside of rapid e-Learning tools: The emergence of "easy-to-use" authoring tools, however, has tempted us to believe that the instructional designer can do it all! In reducing the value of an instructional designer by handing them tools to be lone gunmen, we have created the problem of believing we can replace or eliminate the instructional designer, since our in-house resident experts can do the very same job. Do you think you actually add any value these days? [I

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

Learning Visions

Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it. The idea of learning styles commonly refers to some notion for a preferred way of learning. I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do.
