Recently, I’ve been exploring collaborative web-based options for a report I’m writing and was reintroduced to MyUdutu (from Udutu). I spent an hour or so with Roger from Udutu looking at their authoring tool and have to say I’m really kind of blown away as to its capabilities. Moodle – Yes, it is free – but that is before you need to host it, or resources to build it, and support when your end-users need help, or someone who can maintain and update it – they aren’t free. The magic number.

Based on the way they are hosted, authoring tools can be classified into two categories. Cloud-Based Authoring Tools (Hosted on an external server and accessed via the internet). Cloud-based authoring tools, like Claro and Udutu, have lower learning curves, thereby allowing new users to work on content creation instantly. Cloud-based authoring tools already bring a host of benefits.

They are hosted on the Internet and this eliminates the need to install them on your system. Udutu, Claro, and Easy generator are a few examples of cloud-based e-learning authoring tools. John has stacks of ILT material to be converted into e-learning courses. His experience of working on e-learning projects tells him it will take months to develop the courses and would cost him quite a few dollars.
