While the race is on for people to get LMSs and LCMSs, there are some people who either do not want or need a LMS/LCMS, but want to create a learning community or more often, some type of portal – intranet or internet. They may call it a “learning portal&# or “training or knowledge portal&# or whatever.

I’m on my way to get a car that enables me to launch a robust social learning system. OmniSocial is a social learning platform, with learning management capabilities and with the ability to select individual apps in the system and only use those you select to install onto your web site or learning portal.

One vendor asked if you wanted to learn more about their product and sent you to their help desk to notify them of errors or issues with their system (hmm, not likely to buy one from these guys). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

In the webinar, I brought up how LMS vendors were themselves perpetuating the myth of the bad things of social media (which is a necessary component of social learning), so, rather than identify the facts and data to potential clients who are concerned about social media and thus social learning, they instead do not include it in their system.

The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. If you do not have backups of your courses – your proprietary ones – contact them and have them send you the course files – they can do it, unless they decided to trash their servers with a sledgehammer. Social Learning Stagnation.

Even if the product is a desktop product all you need to do is upload the course to your own web server, use the vendor’s web server or via a LMS. We all fall into the trap of assuming “what you see” is “what it is”, but in today’s e-learning world this may not be the case. Bottom Line.
