Communities of practice. A Community of Practice (CoP) is a social network of people who identify with one another professionally (e.g. Chefs and workers in the kitchen who aspire to be chefs are a community of practice. Newcomers learn the ropes from working alongside veterans.

In the same vein, I talk about Working Smarter instead of informal learning, social learning, and so forth. Some people denigrate informal learning but nobody’s against Working Smarter. Your organization already has a workscape where people are learning to work smarter. Action learning.
