SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. Paul is the SVP of Business Development at dominKnow, a world-class authoring tool that has AI built into it. In the late 80s, AICC, the predecessor to SCORM, was born. It is SaaS-based, which to me, is a must.

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. With the advent of Flash, many authoring tools started creating output that could be played by the Flash player, which meant you didn’t need special software to use the courses (if your IT org would support you having it).

Just like humans need a common language to communicate with each other, eLearning courses and learning management systems (LMS) need a common language so that courses can send information back to the LMS from students taking those courses. In 1997, the DOD established the ADL Initiative to standardize and modernize training.

eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. That’s also evident from the fact that the AICC specification hasn’t been updated in over ten years.
