In order for social media platforms to totally eclipse the function an LMS plays, they would be forced to support interoperability standards like SCORM, AICC or Common Cartridge. In this way, instructors are free to use the exact content (some or all of an IMS CC cartridge) and their platform of choice(LMS, blog, social networking site).

The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). CLO (Chief Learning Officer).
