I think its useful to break category 2 (web-based online) into collaborative and self-paced online courses. Self-paced online is an asynchronous course where the learner progresses through online learning material on an individual basis, without the support of a facilitator or other learners.

All the presenters and attendees stay in their current locations yet everyone joins together in synchronous and asynchronous activities for three days (April 15-17, 2008). Ive heard some good things about this very unique conference. Its a completely virtual conference. Personally I think this is a really great idea!
