In response to the demand for more accessible authoring tools, Authorware was born. Using Authorware , learning professionals could create learning programs with hyper-simplistic designs, primarily through dragging and dropping icons. So, simplicity was there for the author, but at the cost of effective learner engagement.

If ADDIE produces the products you want, does so comfortably, and works effectively with the constraints you work with, I’d stick with ADDIE.

I’ve met people who had worked on the original SCORM standard, those driving the new xAPI standard, as well as early champions of our industry who coined the terms and built the original software tools. By today’s standards, you could assume that most people owned these computers in the same way most people own mobile phones today.

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Spell checker – sheesh shouldn’t this be standard? Should be standard. Celtix - Enables you to create storyboards and scripts. It’s free.

Over the last ten years or so, major elearning developers have preferred to use tools like Flash, Authorware and Director from Adobe (earlier Macromedia). Creating animation is also quite complicated as one has to code time slots and animation effects parameters manually into the XAML file. Elearning development tools: only Adobe?
