Michael was, of course, the creator of Authorware, a highly powerful tool from the CD-ROM era, which Adobe eventually gave up on after they inherited it from Macromedia. Authorware was a serious tool that you could use for serious projects, but with a friendly interface. It's not mentioned anywhere in the literature, so I guess not.

In the early days of e-learning course creation, you could either use your in-house instructional designer(s), self-teach yourself Authorware, DazzlerMax, and similar tools – or have your in-house ID person do it for you, outsource development to a 3rd party aka custom development for your proprietary course. Compared to building courses in Flash or Authorware, the rapid elearning tools are easy to use. I like it that I don’t have to know flash but can still get some of the same effects. There are a lot of other good books I could recommend, but this is a good start and covers a lot of the basics. Play Around with the Software.

We’re warned to not rely too heavily on it for effective elearning. And that’s the case whether they built them in Authorware or PowerPoint. By doing so, I save time and money and still have an opportunity to build effective elearning. Apparently, PowerPoint is only for page-turners and non-interactive elearning.

Anyone who used Authorware can attest to that. When a vendor uses slides as part of their course design approach they are doing you and the person building the course (if not one and the same) a major disservice and fueling the misunderstanding about effective course design.
