Twenty years ago, colleagues at far-flung enterprises communicated by phone, mail and fax. The world moved at a slower pace. Online team rooms keep the lights on as projects move around the world, passed from one team to the next. For example, bloggers may not communicate well with IM users.

Barn Raising - Get people together or virtually together to get the content going. So, yes, you have to set up policies and alert people just like you do around any form of electronic communication (email, IM). A few of the interesting patterns that I commonly think about: Starting Point - Never give people a blank page.
