I want to facilitate online discussions but how do I choose the right platform?

A discussion forum functionality is key for this purpose, other things are nice to have but often blur the decision about the forum to choose. Examples are Winkwaves , Tomoye , icohere , etc. You can also create your own discussion forum within existing intranets or other software used in the organization.
