I think my dinosaur status as an instructional designer stems from the fact that Ive always worked for e-Learning vendors where the programming, graphics, and ID are distinct, separate job roles. The course was strongly based around design theory and use/understanding of technology. I have my expertise, you have yours.

Theres nothing in ADDIE about learning objects or the presentation of information. Most e-Learning vendors mention ADDIE or some form thereof on their websites as if it was a real science about creating effective learning. I dont think ADDIE and Gagne are really in the same class.

E-Learning development houses need to be able to demonstrate a clear value in their services. Why should companies go with e-Learning vendors when rapid e-Learning tools are available? Have the e-Learning vendor create the first few custom programs. I completely agree with this.

Certainly with the rise of rapid e-Learning tools and the increase in SME-published content well start to see an increase in the frequency of updates to e-Learning material. As an e-Learning vendor, I think its our responsibility to make sure that our clients have thought this through.

And, hey, many e-Learning vendors are vested in the "old boomer" model of training. During grad school I learned more of the page turner type of instruction and need a little guidance and brainstorming ideas on how to create effective and sound instruction for simuations. "We dont have the budget for that."

If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution. APIs, Open Source, HTML5. E-Learning 24/7.
