Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace. True, smartphones are here to stay, and they are wonderful for a lot of amazing things, but from a true m-learning standpoint, I just do not see the engaging interactive value here, in comparison to other mobile devices. Oh, yeah, social learning.

Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. I know of one vendor who gives end users the flash files after building the course.

While the race is on for people to get LMSs and LCMSs, there are some people who either do not want or need a LMS/LCMS, but want to create a learning community or more often, some type of portal – intranet or internet. They may call it a “learning portal&# or “training or knowledge portal&# or whatever.

Investment in mobile learning will significantly increase. Mobile learning sub-disciplines will begin to emerge. Mobile learning development for tablets will become one of these sub-disciplines. Flash will still have an impact (at least in the area of mobile learning).
