This little freeware tool plays just about any video format you can throw at it. It has its limitations, especially if you want to edit multiple tracks, but the output is excellent and it’s free on Macs. I use PPT for making simple diagram, for storing visuals, and keeping up with visual models. Every year I start a new PPT of general graphics. It’s time once again to contribute to Jane Hart’s annual survey of tools for learning.

Help! What software tool should I use to record audio?

Sometimes circumstances are such that there is no money to spend on tools, and your IT department or personal policies may be such that you are not willing to download freeware. Online Voice Recorder Online Voice Recorder is an extremely simple Flash-based free tool that allows you to record and save audio. The free tool only allows you to record 30 seconds of audio at a time. Audio can add a great deal to the quality of your course.

Where are open source learning applications?

Think of it as freeware Captivate. * Fun Interactions - Hot Potato * Audio Editing - Audacity and I know there's some that do essentially PPT + audio, lots of ways to create podcasts, video, and the list goes on. Finally, I'm not really sure that asking about open source right now is as relevant as asking about free software as a service (SaaS) models.
