Computers weren’t fast enough to play video, nor were the hard drives large enough – even though the brochure for my stock IBM AT said it contained a “whooping 20 MB hard drive” – so we used a videodisc player connected through a serial cable. Very clunky, but very, very exciting!

And just recently, Adobe announced that it is stopping development on the version of Flash Player that is used on all other mobile devices, as well. But HTML output that you can create with tools like Lectora and ToolBook is usually so… static. You can build lots of other games , as well. Now, can you do all of these things?

Compared to the other big players – dominKnow Claro is a steal. Platte Canyon – Toolbook 11 (full version) $2,795 per license. Why would someone want to take a rapid authoring tool course on a CD player? Oh and were you aware that some laptops and desktops no longer have a CD-ROM player, rather they have only DVD?

The next generation of authoring tools included a handful of really serious players, notably Authorware (now with Adobe) and Toolbook (now with SumTotal), both still going although not so strongly. Of course these all came and went as PCs gradually dominated the market for hardware and Windows took hold.

You watch a couple of football games, normally including the lousy Lions (not this year, though) and grumble to yourself whether you should eat that last piece of pumpkin pie or not (I always eat it). Here in the states, it is nearly Thanksgiving. A time to get together, relax and over gorge on food – whatever it might be.
