I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). Sound like a PLE? For those who don't, the institutional VLE (or perhaps no web based use at all) is an option. This may sound like a climb down from my position on the death of the VLE, but It is not. Almost, but not quite.

If we dispense with online courses in favour of PDFs, how can we incorporate interactivity into the learning experience? Enter the Informal Learning Environment (ILE). Essentially, an ILE is a space (like a website or intranet site) that centralises relevant learning resources in a particular domain.
