Track and trace Learners results. What do SCORM compliance, AICC, XAPI and CMI5 mean?

Challenge to Learn

Do you want to buy a LMS or an authoring tool and are you wondering what the best option is for tracking the results of your learners? Or are you just confused by all the abbreviations like: SCORM, AICC, XAPI, and CMI5? SCORM is a standard in e-Learning that makes it possible to track and trace the results of your learners in a Learning Management system (LMS). A course is SCORM compliant when it meets the requirements of the standard set by the ADL.

xAPI: Why Should I Care and What Could It Do for Me?

Meridian

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). The purpose of the initiative was to develop a standard for eLearning that would meet the needs of both federal and private sectors to replace AICC and correct previous problems. xAPI, like SCORM before it, started from a DoD and ADL 2011 initiative. With xAPI, you can track virtually anything.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

Recently, we updated our products Content Controller and Rustici Dispatch to allow them to export content as LTI, which is a valuable feature for those in the academic space (years ago, we added this feature to SCORM Cloud Dispatch , and already Rustici Dispatch and Content Controller allowed you to import SCORM, xAPI, cmi5 or AICC content and export it as SCORM and AICC to other platforms). SCORM is focused on launching training content and tracking interactions.

DevLearn Thoughts: Is Game Based Learning Misunderstood?

Bottom-Line Performance

Players answer three iterations of the same question while earning points, seeds of knowledge and pearls of wisdom in order to climb the leaderboard and earn a high score. There’s no way to track learner activity in games, so I can’t use it. If an activity is happening outside of the LMS, learner activity could not be tracked. Even for activities inside the LMS, data is usually limited to completion and knowledge check scores.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. The ADL provided compliance testing, so that content and systems could be validated for interoperability. From web activity streams, people started thinking about tracking other forms of activity.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. SCORM is a fairly easy standard to deal with especially since most people are fine with a single SCO that does only single score/completion reporting. One case is building a one-off course that needs simple tracking/reporting and will never run under an LMS. In these cases, I'm not tracking and likely it's not under the LMS.

Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

Tony Karrer

We are developing a SCORM or AICC compliant course either custom or using an authoring tool. And we run into the same tough situation each time: If there's an integration issue, like the score or completion is not getting set appropriately, we want to be able to make changes to the course to try to fix it. Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems.

Mastery score: Defines the score a learner must achieve to pass a SCORM module. A mastery score isn’t compulsory as some SCORM modules don’t include a quiz and some quizzes don’t require a passing score. For example, knowledge checks and practice quizzes are two types of assessment that typically don’t require a mastery score. SCORM defines how online learning content speaks to, and tracks results back to, an LMS.
