At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. It’s all too common to hear someone say “cmi5 is the bridge between SCORM and xAPI” around the office. No matter which DVD you buy, it’ll play in your DVD player at home; you don’t need different players to watch different DVDs. Behold: cmi5, which provides a way to move from SCORM to the more modern xAPI specification.

Hi Andy, We’re currently building a new web application, and we’re looking into using xAPI to capture more data than we can with SCORM. We know we need a Learning Record Store (LRS) to handle xAPI statements, but we aren’t sure which option is best for our app. If you have a question, you can always fill out this form and ask Andy too.

One year ago, we kicked off a project with ADL to develop tools and resources to help accelerate the adoption of cmi5 , and ultimately xAPI, within both the DoD and across the industry as a whole. The cmi5 spec is an xAPI Profile designed for tracking xAPI enabled learning activities from an LMS.

We had a room full of folks who wanted to learn more about best practices for procuring xAPI and cmi5 technologies, and we thought we’d share those with you.

Interest in learning more about SCORM (and xAPI) did not slow down in 2021. We talked to a lot of people looking for help and guidance navigating the standards. Most are starting with SCORM support but looking to expand into xAPI, cmi5 and video support next. Standard is the 20 sided die and low rollers are picking up.
