There are three types of systems that slide under “learning platforms” The most common one supports PowerPoint, and videos and other content – and can track it, but they DO NOT support any version of SCORM, nor do they support AICC, PENS, Tin Can and so on. So you have to use their authoring tool to create courses.

What I am finding is that AICC is nearly gone in the LEP space (as it is with LMSs too), so if I was you, I’d seek SCORM, SCORM 1.2, PENS is nearly non-existent in this segment and CMI-5 is extremely new and few vendors have it – expect more in 2019. Most vendors in the LEP segment have this. You want it.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. The Alternative Vendors of Learning. A vendor can call themselves whatever they want if it makes them happy or sad too, I guess. Ability to upload a course or courses from a 3rd party course/content provider (example: Wiley, Skillsoft, etc.). SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition, AICC, PENS, xAPI, CMI-5).
