On day 1 of the I/O Google has made many announcements like release of open source, royalty-free video format WebM, Chrome Web store, opened up Google Wave, released open source Font API and directory etc. The two announcements which would make the HTML5 development easier and less time consuming are –.

It makes HTML more powerful by adding new elements like video and audio. Video & Audio – You can play video or audio in HTML 5 WITHOUT any plug-in required (like Flash or Silverlight], simply by using the new audio and video markup tags. So what’s the big deal ? and Opera is also working on similar lines.

Smokescreen project is an effort to bring Flash player to the iPhone/iPad without installing the Flash plug-in. It’s an open source project implemented in HTML5 and JavaScript. Primarily, it reads the binary SWF file and renders its animation and audio content to standard web compliant format.

Open Source not Proprietary like Flash. Codecs exist for audio and video. So, who uses what?
