Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. While the assumption would be that all the products are alike, or that fee based tools are superior to their free counterparts, nothing could be farther than the truth. Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. Once you did though, you could do quite a lot with the tool.

Is PowerPoint the most widely used tool for eLearning development? Most of the new authoring tools either use PPT as their backbone or offer the ability to import slides. Interface creation, navigation buttons, LMS tracking, and testing abilities are then typically added to the PPT functionality. I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). Everyone has PPT.

PowerPoint is not E-Learning and shouldn’t be used as your course tool/development – For whatever reason, there are people who have been around online learning for years, who still see PPT as a means for the creation of content – i.e. courses. PPT is boring.

Transitions, Animations, Views – I am fine using it once, but again, new product-new version, so why I am still seeing PowerPoint within this product to such a point, that TAV are exactly the same as in PPT? Personally, I like this because everyone who uses software, often jumps right in and starts going, rather than take the time to read how to do things (inc. Tagged: Articulate , Articulate Storyline 2 , course authoring tools , review of Storyline 2 , Storyline 2.

Preference of E-Learning – Structured or not?

The rise of rapid content authoring tools, specifically the explosive growth of Articulate Studio, which in all sense of the word was nothing more than a PPT converter, allowed anyone, to create an “online course” ID skills not needed. For the authorware supporters this was akin to blasting the planet with gamma rays. Trends are funny.
